  • Scope and Content
Series primarily includes copies of outgoing letters, memoranda, and some cables sent by Secretary’s Department Immediate Office (SECAI) since its establishment in 1946, or prepared by SECAI to be sent by the Managing Director. Other documents are found within the outgoing correspondence including: monthly financial statements; press releases and Executive Board resolutions on countries’ consultations which were sent by SECAI to members of the IMF for information; briefings for the chairman (starting 1957) and Authorized Signatories and Certified Signatures (indicating department and division heads at the time). The more substantive memos relate to: meeting summaries; notices of application of country membership; member par values and schedules; increase in quotas and other country financial communications; matters of Executive Board election; IMF and Joint IMF/Bank committee activities; internal policies such as for travel and Executive Board documents; information provided on staff income tax exemption; privileges and immunities; agreement between IMF and United Nations; discussion of Annual Meeting content; and recordkeeping policies. Additionally, some discussion of countries' financial assistance may be found within the files (Iraq, 1957). The chronological files document the evolution of Secretary's Department and IMF in light of discussions and issues of SECAI and Executive Board in the early IMF years, e.g. tax exemptions for non-U.S. and U.S. citizens and also the initiation of exchange operations (November, 1946). Organizational changes in Secretary's Department are also evident, notably the development of a translation unit and records unit. Arranged in chronological order and reverse chronological order within the files.
