    The Immediate Office of the Research Department was responsible for performing independent work on major policy issues and for supervising and coordinating the work of the Department's other divisions. Research Department Immediate Office materials are organized into series for Department Directors, Deputy Directors, and Advisors. Series include: Director E. Bernstein Subject Files; Director J. Polak Subject Files and Chronological Files; Deputy Director A. Crockett Subject Files and Chronological Files; Deputy Director R. Rhomberg Subject and Chronological Files; Advisor M. Goldstein Subject Files; Advisor M. Dooley Subject Files, Country Files, and Chronological Files; Advisor Jacques René Artus Chronological Files; and, Advisor J. Williamson Subject Files. Files for Director William Hood were not received by the Archives, and are therefore not available for research. Also, files of Deputy Directors from the 1940s and 1950s have not been received by the Archives. Materials from the 1940s through the 1960s have most likely been incorporated into the Central Files Collection or the early records of the newly created area departments.
