Indholdsbeskrivelse
Series consists of two sets of subject files maintained by Research Department Director Edward M. Bernstein. The first set, labelled "Speeches and Seminars," contains correspondence, drafts and newspaper clippings regarding speeches delivered by Bernstein between 1949 and 1955. The files are arranged chronologically. Drafts cover subjects including dollar shortage, convertibility of currencies, dollar payments, and dollar trade. The second set of subject files, labelled "Sterling Convertibility," contains material regarding plans made in 1954 for a stand-by arrangement with the United Kingdom to help the country move to convertibility. Files include: drafts of papers, notes and memoranda prepared mostly by Bernstein, with some annotations by Managing Director I. Rooth and Research Department Deputy Director J.J. Polak. Subjects covered by drafts include Bernstein's "Notes on Sterling Convertibility" (April 2, 1954) and a series of subsequent documents - numbered 1-11 - prepared for possible submission to the Board. The "Sterling Convertibility" set also contains later material dealing with related issues (liquidity and the UK transactions, 1956; sale of gold to replenish Fund's holdings in US dollars, 1957).
