Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence and internal memoranda of Shailendra J. Anjaria in his positions as Economist and later Assistant Director with responsibility for Trade and Payments Division. The correspondence includes letters to Ernest Sturc, ETR Director in reply to UNCTAD Secretariat invitations; GATT Balance of Payments Consultations correspondence; trade restrictions for Balance of Payments adjustment; notes to the Immediate Office regarding preparation for meetings regarding multilateral trade negotiations with developing countries; and comprehensive dossiers containing background information for the IMF representative to the UNCTAD Conference. Also contained in the files are drafts on Exchange and Trade Restrictions in member countries; a report to the Manila Charter of the Group of 77; and a guidance paper on the IMF's Compensatory Financing Facility which was prepared by the Trade and Payments Division in conjunction with the Commodities Division, Research Department. The latter, which was prepared for use at UNCTAD session, outlined the IMF's general approach to compensatory financing, country eligibility, and discriminatory versus automatic compensation.
