Series consists of correspondence and memoranda surrounding a mission headed by Central Banking Department Director Jan Viktor Mládek to Saigon (South Vietnam) in 1966. Other mission members included W. John R. Woodley, Deputy Director Asian Department; L. Dini, Chief, Equatorial Africa and Malagasy Division; Djahangir Boushehri, Chief, North African Division; Arifin M. Siregar, Economist, Asian Department; and James E. Humphries, who served as secretary. The mission was requested by the National Bank of Vietnam to examine the monetary situation and the need for technical assistance. Its objectives was to look for and develop means for reducing post-war inflation in Vietnam which was caused by the government’s budgetary deficit, official spending by the United States (U.S.) and spending by the U.S. troops stationed in Vietnam. Correspondents include: Governor Nguyen-Huu-Hanh, National Bank of Vietnam; Mládek; Savkar, Director, Asian Department; Robert Eisenburg, Resident Representative in Vietnam; Boushehri, who was assigned as a Technical Assistant to the National Bank after the initial mission; Pierre-Paul Schweitzer, Managing Director; and Frank A. Southard, Jr., Deputy Managing Director. Files also include minutes of meetings held between Vietnamese officials, and representatives of the U.S. State Department, Treasury, the Federal Reserve, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Files reflect the IMF’s relations with Vietnam and the United States during the Vietnam War. Topics of interest include U.S. financed imports, German aid to Vietnam and the replenishment of gold holdings.
