Records in this series reflect all aspects of the Western Hemisphere Department's functions and activities as they relate to the 2 G-7 countries and 32 developing countries it was overseeing during this time period, in particular the monitoring of economic, financial, and political developments, the planning, conducting, follow-up and progress of consultation missions, missions related to the use of Fund resources, economic programs, and technical assistance efforts with other Fund departments, the managing of relations and coordinating of work with the World Bank and organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, Paris Club and private banks, and the reporting to and advising for the Office of the Managing Director and Executive Directors on country matters. Records consist of memoranda exchanged between the WHD Director and the Managing Director, Deputy Managing Director, Members of the Executive Board, Deputy Directors, Senior Advisors, Division Chiefs, and Department Heads; correspondence and cables exchanged within the Department, with IMF Resident Representatives (typically numbered letters on recent political and economic developments in the country), and with other technical assistance experts assigned to countries; external memoranda, letters, telexes, telegrams, and cables exchanged with country officials, Central Banks, commercial banks, the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), other regional and international organizations, and academic institutions; minutes of meetings; reports; background notes, briefing and debriefing papers; comments on drafts and final papers prepared by WHD or in collaboration with other departments; comments on documents prepared by other departments; documents issued by the World Bank and other international organizations; newspaper clippings, press releases, speeches, statements, and printed materials. The files also contain records provided by the member countries from high-level officials and heads of state related to recent economic and political developments in the country; decrees and legislations; appointment and resignation letters, and economic, financial, and fiscal data. There are also some records in the form of correspondence, received from private citizens and groups. Files in this series are organized alphabetically according to country and chronologically within each file. There are a few files organized by region, namely Latin America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Additionally, one-time occurrence files can be found on a few topics, for example US - Libyan Sanctions. Predominant are issues related to addressing overdue obligations of countries that are in arrears to the Fund or external creditors, navigating the impact of political crisis on work of the department, and the implementation and monitoring of Fund economic programs via mission and staff visit discussions, specifically for Article IV Consultations, Enhanced Structural Facilities, and Standby Arrangements.
