- Omfattning och innehållSeries consists of country files maintained by the African Department Immediate Office. Records reflect all aspects of AFR Department's functions and activities, in particular the use of IMF financing programs, the conduct of missions, and the monitoring of economic, financial and political developments in member countries. Files reveal the work between the African Department Immediate Office, its Divisions, other IMF departments, and IMF management, thus providing valuable information on the IMF's activities and approaches in African member countries. Files also demonstrate how member countries used IMF financing over time. Files are arranged alphabetically by country and then chronologically. There are a few individual files on particular topics, such as the Ghana Aid and Debt Relief Meetings from roughly 1967-1974 and the Special Consultations for Nigeria in 1975. There are also two files with correspondence and documents from Transkei, which was not an IMF member. Records consist of: memoranda exchanged between the AFR Department Director and the Managing Director, Deputy Managing Directors, Members of the Executive Board, and Department Heads; correspondence exchanged within the Department, with IMF Resident Representatives, and with other technical assistance experts assigned to countries; memoranda, letters, and cables exchanged with country government officials, central banks, embassies, and other regional and international organizations; draft and final Executive Board Documents; copies of legislation sent by member countries; briefing papers; back-to-office reports for visits to countries; minutes of meetings between AFR or IMF staff and member representatives or other institutions, including the IBRD; country background notes; news wire telexes; comments on drafts and final papers prepared by AFR, sometimes in collaboration with other departments; and, comments or responses to documents prepared by other Departments or external academic institutions and other organizations. Most of the correspondence between AFR and the member countries is tied to the collection of up-to-date economic, fiscal and financial data, requests for IMF financing or technical assistance, or the mission cycle. There are also records relating to the membership process as new African countries joined the IMF and AFR began corresponding with them. The following are also prevalent topics in the files: exchange rates; restrictions; purchases and repurchases (currency and SDR transactions); reserves; and international creditors. A tranche of files was appended to the Country Files from box number 157 to 406. They range from between 1967 and 1997 but the predominant dates between 1985 and 1995.
